This boldly-titled book, by Sean Hastings and Paul Rosenberg, covers quite a bit of ground.  Some of it arguably meanders off into  the outer fringe of reasonable, but it remains a completely valid, and valuable, work.  Ostensibly, the book encourages people to think more freely by way of postulating the origin and means of perpetuation of many of the ideas that pervade and define human existence, ie. primarily religion.  Using intelligent metaphors and thought-provoking examples, many of the concepts are very well hammered home.

Centrally, the book takes aim at the entire concept of a “higher power,” and not just in the religious sense.  Additionally, much real estate is given to exactly why people believe many of the things they do.  Some of the conclusions are surprising and enlightening.

One of the main points, and something just about anyone can immediately integrate into their own reality fairly painlessly, is the concept and understanding that nothing should be taken and believed as a whole; that many untruths are packaged within larger truths.  You should always identify the individual pieces of anything before you wholly accept it; disregard those parts that do not resound with the ring of truth, thus accepting whatever remains as truth.  This concept is very well illustrated within the book.

One of the more interesting parts of the book, for me personally, was in regards to how exactly man evolved from Hunter-Gatherers and nomads, into the initial appearance of Kings and so forth.  Additionally, it is suggested that the acronym WWJD be replaced with WWMISD… What Would My Ideal Self Do?

The defining work of Harold Waldwin Percival is Thinking & Destiny, undoubetedly.  However, each of his books does deserve special attention as each elaborates on a specific point addressed within T&D.

Democracy is Self-Government explains why we can never have a true Democracy in this world until we literally govern ourselves from within.  Which is to say “govern our Self, from within.”  When the majority of the individuals existing within the political borders of a given region each are goverened from within, then that political region would be able to experience a true Democracy.  Presently, American is the closest thing this world has to a Democracy, though America is in no way a true Democracy.

In a true Democracy, there would be no political parties.  Party politics divides the people, plain and simple.  The division of the people should be avoided.  Sadly, one of the only things that unifies us, as a people, is a common enemy; be it people not geographically near to us or people with different beliefs, or an abstraction like “terrorism” or even something tangible like drugs.  Whatever the case may be, the fact is that we only unify in opposition to a common enemy.  The reason for this?  We are not Self-governed.

By and large, we are governed by fear.  We are reactionary.  We want for ourselves that which we would deny the next person from having.  Whether we admit it or not.  This is not a commentary on America, this is a commentary on human beings.  America happens to have a toehold on moving in the proper direction, but that toehold is tenous, at best.  Once you choose to govern yourself, from within, you will manifest that in the external world and you will see your Government change.  Government change; that’s a topic for another day.

I have drifted off-course of what this book is truly about, however anyone intersted in the theme of this blog, as a whole, should read this book.  It is available for purchase, or as a free .pdf download, at: http://word-foundation.org/b-Democracy_is_Self_Government.htm

What if, when your physical body dies it become necessary to pass through certain after-death states.  What if one of those states was necessary in order to seperate one Self from it’s lower feelings and desires.  What if, when it was time for that Self to incarnate again that it was reunited with those exact feelings and desires in order to then proceed on with the process of balancing the thoughts that birthed said feelings and desires throughout the next physical life.

If that were true, then where would those feelings and desires exist whilst separated from the Self that they are fundamentally a part of?  For the period of time in which that purified Self was at rest, between lives, or existing in a place sometimes termed “heaven,” by those who don’t have another word for such a place?

Well, since we’re playing the “what if” game… what if each of those feelings and desires were to manifest on the physical plane as the physical form, or manifestation, of itself.  What if some feelings were to manifest as trees or grass… what if some desires manifested as animals, and vice versa.  What if feelings of rage manifested as boars or lions.  What if feelings of love manifested as flowers.  What if desires of domination manifested as certain species of ape and what if feelings of deceit manifested as, say, sharks.  What if feelings of loyalty manifested as dogs and narcissistic desires manifested as cats.  What if that is the exact reason we sometimes use animal references when pointing out character flaws in others… men are often called “pigs.”

What if, when it is time for the Self that any given manifested feeling or desire is attached to is ready to reincarnate, each manifested feeling or desire must immediately abandon the physical form in which it resides.  If that were true, maybe it explains why sometimes animals run in front of automobiles.  That deer must vacate that physical form in order to join the Self to which it is an expression of for another ride on the merry-go-round of life as a human being.  What if each one of those feelings and desires is but playing it part on it’s own way to becoming a conscious Self which would then generate feelings and desires of its own that would then manifest physically as the flora, fauna and animals of the Earth inhabited by the physical bodies of the Self to which it is attached.

If that were true, everything would be connected to everything.  Imagine that.

Gunther von Hagens’s Bodyworlds is truly something to behold.  How many formerly living human bodies have you been in the same room with at the same time?  Personally, thanks to having experienced the Bodyworlds exhibit on two separate occasions, I’ve lost count.  This is an exceptionally fascinating project, though I’m slightly conflicted on the situation of the participants, post life, which I’ll get to in a few moments.

Fundamentally, Bodyworlds is an art exhibit that showcases human bodies in ways that most living humans have never seen.  Deceased individuals are preserved via a process called “plastination” that basically prevents decomposition and allows the body to be manipulated/posed/displayed in virtually any fashion.   I use the term “fashion” literally and figuratively… in that a body can be separated into it’s individual parts and displayed in an amazing way, or it can be posed as if playing poker, or riding atop a plastinated de-skinned horse.  It may sound morbid, but it truly isn’t… at least not for any reasonable individual.  In my humble opinion, even children should see this exhibit, I would certainly take my own children, aged 5 and 7, should this exhibit return to my city for a third run.

At any rate, the DVD shown in the picture in the previous post was purchased at the exhibit itself, but is available on the official website:

http://www.bodyworlds.com

Go have a look, be amazed.

As for my concern for the participants, or plastinates as they are known, Thinking & Destiny addresses a period following death in relation to the existing physical body.  I’m epically paraphrasing here, but basically the sooner that the physical body is destroyed, the sooner the former inhabitant can disassociate its thought processes to the physical Earth and proceed through the after-death states.  All of this will absolutely be discussed in future posts, I’m definitely getting ahead of myself here, but essentially the best way to dispose of a body is cremation.  It return the body to element and frees the former inhabitant from it fully, they can “move on,” as the saying goes.  Any other method of postmortem body-handling will inevitable hinder the individual from rapidly traversing certain after-death states.  Again, we’re way ahead of ourselves, but I can’t help but wonder the effect on the Self of having one’s former body plastinated upon death.

At any rate, what’s done is done and godspeed to all former inhabitants of plastinated bodies and those presently alive who shall become future plastinates.  Long live Bodyworlds!

Two posts in two days?  I decided to quickly hammer this one out so as to have a post on 2/22 as a nod the the birth of this blog on 1/11.

I’m going to address the recommendations from the prior post alphabetically.  Not only is that logical, it also conveniently leaves the most disturbing work for last.  In light of that, I’d like to direct your attention to the work of artist Alex Grey.  Fans of the band Tool will recognize Grey’s artwork throughout the band’s last 2 albums, Lateralus and Ten Thousand Days.  If you happen to not be a fan of the aforementioned band, do not discount Grey’s work by way of throwing the proverbial baby out with the proverbial bathwater.  You owe it to yourself to give his work some attention.  Grey is able to visualize and render onto canvas non-physical realities, or at least an interpretation of these realities, like no other artist that I’ve ever encountered.  He has also captured the human body, physically and non-physically, in a truly unique and engaging way.

Please go to his websites and view his work.

The actual DVD that I own, shown in the image in the prior post, is his COSM: The Movie.  This DVD basically consists of Grey giving a guided tour of his Chapel of Sacred Mirrors.  You can purchase the DVD at the following link:

http://shop.cosm.org/cosmthemovie.aspx

It should go without saying that I reap no benefit from your purchasing this DVD, or anything from anyone that I recommend.   None of the people who’s work I recommend even know that I exist.  The only benefit to me is the knowledge that I have hopefully caused a net improvement to humanity by hopefully convincing a couple of individuals to expose themselves to works that will either improve them as people, even if only in minute ways, or otherwise broaden their perspective on life, which is also a win as far as I’m concerned.

However, if I do ever sign up for like an Amazon affiliate type of situation as has been recommended to me, that information will be publicly declared and not hidden in any way.  Cause, ya know, webhosting ain’t free and whatnot… though I do enjoy an employee discount…

Depending on which way the wind blows, the next post will either be another recommendation elaboration situation or… not.

No single source is definitive on any given topic, ever.  To memorize the information presented within a single source such that you can repeat said information on command, as facts, and consider yourself an expert on the given topic is an insult to yourself and those to whom you are presenting said information.  In other words, no one knows everything about anything; it is simply not possible.  How then do you become knowledgeable on a given topic?  By studying multiple, even conflicting, sources.  You gather as much information as is reasonable, then distill it down to that which doesn’t conflict with your own *cough* sense of reason *cough*.  In light of that, I’m presenting my personal recommendations for books and movies that one would do well to read and view should they be interested in the topics I’m presenting in this blog.

Some of these books and movies may contradict each other on certain points.  I may not personally agree with each point presented in each work.  Some of these present very controversial information, some may contradict facts that you have taken as granted for being fundamental truths.  The bottom line is that we must each decide for ourselves that which we will take as truth.  No matter the topic or circumstance in life, that holds true, relatively.  Unless for you it doesn’t.  See how that works?

Without further ado, here is a picture that I just took:

Alphabetically, we have:

Alex Grey’s Chapel of Sacred Mirrors

Gunther von Hagens’s Bodyworlds

Democracy is Self Government

God Wants you Dead

On another note: Please know that I am publishing each new post on the day it is written… there is no backlog, outline or plan for future posts.  This blog is off-the-cuff, and hopefully that adds to the enjoyment of reading it, as it definitely adds to the enjoyment of writing it.  As such, please be understanding of potential large gaps between posts.

Until next time…

Karma.  What is karma?  Well, this is.  And that is… basically everything is karmically related.  How could it not be?  Previously, we defined karma as “the total of one’s past thoughts and actions giving cause to the present circumstances by which one shall be caused to think and act as a result of.”  Let’s take that piece by piece, then I’m going to throw a little bit more in the mix to elaborate.

“The total of one’s past thoughts and actions…”

You have lived and died countless times.  In said times, you have done well and not well.  You have caused harm to others and thought ill of them… what’s the difference, really?  You have showed honor and cowardice, trust and paranoia.  Each of these thoughts and actions are thus an imbalance that you will need to bring back into balance, in the near or distant future.

“…giving cause to the present circumstances…”

As such, your experiences today are a direct result of your thoughts and actions from the near or distant past.  You alone are responsible for, and the creator of, your present circumstance.

“…by which one shall be caused to think and act as a result of.”

The way in which you react to, and more importantly think with regard to, your present circumstance will dictate and design your future circumstance which you will experience as your present in that future moment.  And the cycle will continue, lifetime after lifetime after lifetime.

As we discussed previously, karma is the force that dictates destiny.

To elaborate a little bit further on this, there are multiple “types” of destiny, for lack of a better phrase.  We’re going to discuss only two, presently; Physical & Psychic.  The best way to illustrate these “types” is with an example, rather than a static definition.  So… you have been in a car crash, and you are injured to a greater or lesser degree.  The injury itself is physical destiny, the thoughts that you have as a result of the accident (“I should have done this or that to have prevented the accident…” or “…that dirty SOB should have been looking where he was going…” ad infinitum) is psychic destiny.  Each are karmically dictated by your past thoughts and actions and your thoughts and actions related to each presently then dictate your future circumstance.

Our collective destiny dictates that the next post will have some other recommendations for beneficial books and movies.  We’ll take a slight detour from all the heady stuff.

Until then.

What is “destiny?”  Simply put, destiny is the manifesting/manifested result of karma.  What does that mean, though?

Well, you wake up every morning.  Stuff happens.  Sometimes you consider this stuff to be “good” stuff, sometimes “bad.”  How you classify this stuff is a matter of perception, which we’ll discuss on another day.  The fact of the matter is, any day that you wake up… stuff will happen.  As sure as stuff will happen, you will react to said stuff.  Cause and effect.  One way to take control of your life at any given moment is to become a person of action, rather than a person of reaction.  Most people initially react significantly more than they initially act.

Whether you are acting or reacting in any given moment, you are generating a karmic force.  Any action that you take must be proceeded by a thought.  You cannot perform any action without initially having thought of said action; it’s impossible.  Don’t mistake my over-simplified example as a law.  Karma is a topic that we’ll discuss at length in the future, for now we are grossly over-simplifying.  The point is, every moment of every day with the thoughts you think and the actions you perform, you are making deposits into your own personal karmic “bank account.”  At the same moment, you are making withdraws from the same account.  The manifestation, which is to say “the appearance in or on the physical realm,” of the results of this karmic account is what we refer to as “Destiny.”  Because fundamentally, destiny is that which happens to you in any given moment; it’s not just the epic events that are destiny.  When it comes to the facts of the matter, it has to be all or nothing.  You meeting and marrying your “soul mate” is no more or less your destiny than what you ate for breakfast… again, since we’re presently dealing with a gross over-simplification.

The standard argument then, is this: If everything is planned out like this, then where does Free-Will come into it or are we simply characters in a Universal play that is already pre-determinded such that we get no say in our own lives?

The answer is yes and no.  See, that karmic account that you are perpetually crediting and debiting from… it has existed for as long as you have existed as a consciously aware individual being.  Now, there was a particular point at which this came to be.  In a nutshell, the biblical story of Adam & Eve is a metaphor for this event, which every single person alive on the planet Earth today experienced.  This is explained in great detail in T & D, but regrettably there’s no way to properly condense that into an acceptable length for use within this blog post.  In a nutshell, every single one of us was given a simple trial, or test, and every single one of us on Earth failed.  Those who passed, there was no cause for them to exist in this world of birth and death and birth and death… those who passed said test skipped this grade and went directly to that place which we shall all go once we work ourselves out of this karmic hole that we have dug for ourselves.  See, life as we know it is basically just a cul-de-sac on the road of existence.  We turn into it, and whoops realize it’s a cul-de-sac and eventually we reach the end, turn around go back and get on the main road.  No matter who you are and what you do and how you feel about yourself or any other human being… we’re all just hanging out in this cul-de-sac, some of us on our way in and some on our way out, but we are all in this Universal cul-de-sac together.  Because we all failed that which T & D terms “the trial test of the sexes.”

Now, from that point on, we began this karmic system of credits and debits.  So you see, you have been accessing this account for an amount of time that can fairly be called “eternity.”  From our human perspective, it might as well be forever, in that it extends back well beyond a time such that we are able to remember or even conceptualize.  In that amount of time, you have been pauper and prince, man and woman, grandparent and child… you have been hater and hated, lover and fighter, noble and pathetic.  The sum part of your entire past is credited into your account; every thought and action you have ever create and performed is there on the ledger.  Only you are responsible for this ledger.  There is no absolution.  Jesus didn’t die for your sins to be wiped clean.  That is simply another metaphor; a metaphor for the moment when you acknowledge accountability for your actions and resolve to correct them… which is simply restoring to balance all that you have caused to be imbalanced as a result of these past thoughts and deeds.  Once you accept this accountability, Jesus has thus died for your sins… metaphorically speaking.  So… don’t let him die in vain, or something.

That aside, I hope I have effectively established the existence of this karmic account and how, as a result of innumerable past lives, you have basically set up a system such that seemingly random events can now take place in any moment of any day… all of which are your destiny, as dictated by your karma.  So, you see, you do have free will to react to your present circumstances, but that reaction will cause manifestation at some future point the circumstances that exists as a direct result of that prior action.  You will then react to those circumstances, which are then your destiny, and said reactions (and thoughts related to said actions) become karmic deposits towards that future manifestation.  Never forget; all things are cyclical.

When next we meet, we’ll speak more directly about karma.

Let’s throw some more terms out there such that we can begin actually discussing some things more in depth.

We need to agree that we are not the bodies that we inhabit… at least not any more so than we are the clothes that we wear.  Fundamentally, a body is to the conscious something inhabiting said body as clothes are to the body wearing said clothes.  We need a term to specifically indicate this “conscious something.”  For our purposes here, we shall use the term Little Self.  Your Little Self then is by and large what and whom you consider yourself to be… should there be a time such that you consider yourself, that is.  Anytime to you refer to yourself as “I,” as in “I am…” or “I think…” or “I want…”  you are referring to your Little Self.  As such, by and large, you most likely consider this Little Self to be a big deal.  It’s isn’t, though.  T&D explains that this Little Self is actually no more than 1/12 of 1/3 of that which we’ll term the Big Self.

For the record, T&D calls our Little Self an embodied doer portion.  So yes, you take one Big Self, split it into three equal portions, take one of those portions and divide it by twelve, one of those twelve portions would be embodied presently and would in fact, be what you consider to be, well, you.  We may be getting ahead of ourselves here.  Just for fun, let’s throw this out there:  That which you recognize as God, in whatever form you recognize a deity or creator as, is none other than that part of yourself which is not embodied.  Neat, huh?  God = your very own Big Self.  Riddle me this:  How else could “God” hear each & every prayer spoken by each and every believer?  Because of magic!?  Like Santa!

In the future, we may alter these terms as we proceed in our thinking here, but presently Little Self and Big Self are what we’re defaulting to.  One of the nice things about thinking on abstract ideas is that it’s not actually necessary to term the individual pieces, because you already know what you mean.  When abstractions needs to manifest in the physical though, it becomes necessary to clothe the abstraction within a label.  So, there we are.

We can now state the following and have a basic understanding of the terminologies therein: I, as an individual conscious being, am fundamentally a Little Self which is but a portion of a Big Self that is presently embodied to exist in this physical world for a time in order to work out my own karma, which I manifest as my destiny.

Oh.

We didn’t yet cover the idea of “destiny” being simply the manifestation of karma, did we?  Next time…

There’s a few basics we need to agree on before we can proceed.  A few concepts that are fundamental to our purpose here; a few words we need to define for our specific application and use.  One of these concepts is “reincarnation.”  One of these words is “karma.”  In fact, those two words alone will likely fuel multiple posts all by their lonesomes.   I may have just pluralized “lonesome” right there.  Poor form on my part, I apologize.  Grammatical failure aside,  karma and reincarnation are indispensable to the philosophy I’m presenting here, though likely not in the way that one may initially assume.  For example, “karma” doesn’t come in “good” and “bad” versions and “reincarnation” absolutely does not mean that if you’re “bad” in this life, then you will be reborn in your next life as a… reality tv star.  I don’t know.  Maybe that’s a bad example, but if you aspire to be a reality tv star, please exit this blog to the left, immediately.  I’m just sayin’. Go. Now.  Seriously.

What then is “reincarnation?”  I am going to define it as such: the phenomenon wherein a conscious being, or Self, enters and vacates a series of human bodies, on or around birth and death, throughout re-existences such that said conscious Self is able to experience physical lives as human beings for the periods of time such that it is present within said human bodies and for the purpose of said experiences.

Fair enough.

Admittedly, that definition is slightly loaded.  For example, what then is the “Self” mentioned therein?  Well… you and I, in a nutshell.  However, we’ll pick that up on another day.  This is but a single blog post, after all.

The other term we need to define presently is “karma.” Thinking and Destiny defines karma as “the results of the actions and reactions of mind and desire.”  Now, if that doesn’t make much sense presently, don’t worry.  Sometimes you have to simply read the words now in order to comprehend them properly later.  Merriam-webster.com defines karma, in part, “…the force generated by a person’s actions…”  I can kinda-sorta back that snippet of their definition, but for our purposes here, and the necessity of defining this word herein, I’m going to go with this: the total of one’s past thoughts and actions giving cause to the present circumstances by which one shall be caused to think and act as a result of.

Circular, dig it!

So, yes we reincarnate.  And yes karma dictates the circumstances in which we find ourselves in any given incarnation.  You’re born, you live your life, you die.  You wake up, you go about your day, you go to sleep at night.  What’s the difference between a single day and an entire incarnation?  Not much; both are periods in which you are active as a physical being in a physical body in this physical world working through the circumstances in which you find your Self in any given moment, as dictated by your karma.  There is a term for said circumstances, that term is “destiny.”  We’ll discuss that term on another day.

Why?

Because that’s our destiny, as dictated by our karma that we are subject to work through partially as a result of the function of  reincarnation, which is of itself a result of karma and subject to destiny.  Until then…
